Coalition Publica is launching a call for applications for scholarly journals wishing to be disseminated on the erudit.org platform as of January 2024 in order to benefit from Coalition Publica's services for journals, including financial support through the Partnership for Open Access. The journal should submit its application before Monday, April 10, 2023. Applications received after this date may be evaluated for the following year.

Selection Criteria

To be eligible, applicant journals must meet the following criteria:

• The journal must follow a rigorous and independent peer review process.

• At least one third of the journal’s editorial committee must be made up of researchers affiliated with a Canadian post-secondary educational institution and/or the journal must be owned by a Canadian not-for-profit organization.

• The journal must publish at least six scholarly articles per year.

• The journal must have been published for at least two years as a peer-reviewed scholarly journal.

• The journal must be related to a social science or humanities discipline.

• The journal must publish primarily in English and/or French.

Process

1. Complete the online application form at https://forms.gle/kw78GZSsy38sNTWq9

2. Érudit’s Scientific Director will examine the applications and will approve, reject or outline conditions for the inclusion of the journal on the erudit.org platform. 

3. Choose a type of digital production. Érudit will provide applicant journals with a proposal with two options:

   • Minimal XML (metadata tagging, production of articles in PDF format). See example.

   • Full XML (metadata and full text tagging, production of articles in PDF and HTML). See example.

4. Sign contracts between the journal and Érudit. Contracts must be returned to Érudit before July 31, 2023, otherwise the journal cannot be integrated in 2024.

Coalition Publica ouvre son appel à candidatures annuel pour les revues savantes souhaitant être diffusées sur la plateforme erudit.org dès janvier 2024, et ainsi bénéficier de ses services aux revues, tels que le financement offert grâce au Partenariat pour le libre accès. La revue doit faire parvenir son dossier de candidature avant le lundi 10 avril 2023. Les dossiers reçus après cette date ne pourront être traités et seront ajoutés à notre liste d’attente pour l’année suivante.

Critères de sélection 

Afin d’être admissible, la revue savante candidate doit au préalable respecter les critères suivants :

• La revue suit un processus de révision par les pairs rigoureux et indépendant.

• Le comité de rédaction de la revue est composé d’au minimum un tiers (⅓) de chercheur·euses affilié·es à un établissement postsecondaire canadien, ou la revue doit appartenir à un organisme à but non lucratif canadien.

• La revue publie au moins six articles savants par année. 

• La revue doit avoir été publiée depuis au moins deux ans en tant que revue savante révisée par les pairs.

• La revue est rattachée au domaine des sciences humaines et sociales.

• La revue publie principalement en français et/ou en anglais.

Étapes de la procédure

1. Remplir le formulaire de demande d’adhésion à l’adresse https://forms.gle/kw78GZSsy38sNTWq9

2. Le comité scientifique d’Érudit étudie la candidature et émet un avis positif, négatif ou conditionnel pour l’intégration de la revue sur la plateforme Érudit.

3. Choisir le type de traitement numérique: l’équipe d’Érudit fournit à la revue candidate un devis de production numérique avec deux options de traitement numérique:
   – Traitement minimal (balisage des métadonnées, production d’une version en format PDF des articles). Voir exemple.
   – Traitement complet (balisage des métadonnées, production d’une version PDF et HTML des articles). Voir exemple.

4. Signer les contrats entre la revue et Érudit. Les contrats devront être retournés à Érudit avant le 31 juillet 2023, sans quoi la revue ne pourra être intégrée pour l’année 2024.

Call for proposals 2023 - Textual data in SSH

Access the research potential of massive collections of textual data 

As part of Coalition Publica activities, Érudit is developing large corpora of textual data through partnerships with the country's leading documentary institutions: Library and Archives Canada, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec, Canadiana / CRKN and the Bibliothèque de l'Assemblée nationale du Québec. These corpora include the full text of entire collections of newspapers, scholarly and cultural journals, magazines and government documents published in Canada. 

In total, there are nearly 5 million text files available for computer-assisted analysis. The corpora were updated in the fall of 2022, to improve access and the quality of optical recognition. The collections date back to the 19th century and are unique in their temporal scope. They constitute an important primary resource for research in many disciplines such as history, sociology, linguistics, economics, literature, computer science and information systems. You can find out more by consulting Coalition Publica’s Services for Researchers page or on the corpora documentation.  

Eligible projects and use of corpora

Eligible projects must be solely for research purposes and may not be commercially oriented. The research corpora are accessible from the Digital Research Alliance of Canada and Calcul Québec infrastructure. They can be batch downloaded by SSH key or by the big data transfer tool Globus. The processing of textual data corpora requires skills in computer analysis of big data, automated text mining and/or digital humanities. 

Examples of projects carried out with corpora 

• A study employing an emergening research methodology, sentometrics, which transforms qualitative data (sentiment) into quantitative data (expressions of sentiment in a text). 

• Research on transatlantic exchanges in the press between Europe and America and the phenomenon of "virality" in the French press in the 19th century.

• The creation of a digital research tool to identify conversations taking place within a community of researchers on social networks and to contextualize them.

Appel à projets 2023 - Données textuelles en SHS

Accédez au potentiel de recherche de vastes ensembles de données textuelles! 

Dans le cadre des activités de Coalition Publica, Érudit développe de vastes corpus de données textuelles grâce à des partenariats établis avec les principales institutions documentaires au pays : Bibliothèque et Archives Canada, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec, Canadiana / RCDR et la Bibliothèque de l’Assemblée nationale du Québec. Ces corpus comprennent le plein texte de collections entières de journaux, de revues savantes et culturelles, de magazines et de documents gouvernementaux publiés au Canada. 

Au total, ce sont près de 5 millions de fichiers textuels disponibles pour analyse assistée par ordinateur. Les corpus ont été mis à jour au cours de l’automne 2022, afin de faciliter leur accès et d’améliorer la qualité de la reconnaissance optique des textes. Remontant au 19e siècle, ces corpus sont uniques par leur amplitude temporelle. Ils constituent une ressource de première importance pour la recherche dans de nombreuses disciplines comme l’histoire, la sociologie, la linguistique, l’économie, la littérature, l’informatique et les systèmes d'information.  Vous pouvez en découvrir plus en consultant la page des Services aux chercheurs de Coalition Publica et les pages de Documentation du projet.  

Projets admissibles et utilisation des corpus

Les projets admissibles doivent être poursuivis à des fins de recherche et ne peuvent faire l’objet de visées commerciales. Les corpus de recherche sont accessibles depuis l’infrastructure de l’Alliance de recherche numérique du Canada et de Calcul Québec. Ils peuvent être téléchargés en lot par clé SSH ou par l’outil de transfert de données massives Globus. Le traitement des corpus de données textuelles nécessite des compétences en analyse informatique des données massives, en fouille de textes automatisée et/ou en humanités numériques. 

Exemples de projets réalisés avec les corpus 

• Une étude portant sur l’émergence de méthodologies de recherche telle que la sensométrie, qui transforme des données qualitatives (sentiments) en données quantitatives (expression de sentiment dans un texte). 

• Une recherche consacrée aux échanges transatlantiques dans la presse entre l’Europe et l’Amérique et au phénomène de “viralité” dans la presse francophone au XIXe siècle.

• La création d’un outil de recherche numérique permettant d’identifier une partie des conversations qui ont cours au sein d’une communauté de chercheur·e·s sur les réseaux sociaux et de les contextualiser.

As part of SSHRC's Pan-Canadian Access to Knowledge Initiative, Coalition Publica supports emerging researchers through a scholarship program. Designed for early-career researchers and students, this program aims to support projects or research that address the scholarly communication system and research dissemination, or that apply digital humanities methods to the corpus developed by Coalition Publica.

The submitted projects were evaluated on the basis of the relevance of their research topics and their originality. The grants were awarded in accordance with the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion, and we are pleased to announce today the list of the eight winning projects.

Dans le cadre de l’Initiative pancanadienne d'accès aux connaissances du CRSH, Coalition Publica soutient la relève en recherche à travers un programme de bourses. Coalition Publica will strengthen its digital services to the Canadian and international scholarly community with continued investment from CFI.

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is awarding a $10 million grant to Coalition Publica under the Major Science Initiatives Fund 2023-2029. Through this program, CFI contributes to the ongoing operation and maintenance needs of research facilities of national importance in order to enable Canadian researchers to undertake world-class research.

Coalition Publica is developing an open, non-commercial infrastructure for digital research, dissemination, and scholarly publishing. It is based on the complementarity between the publishing software Open Journal Systems, developed by the Public Knowledge Project (Simon Fraser University (SFU)), and the erudit.org dissemination platform of the Érudit Consortium (Université de Montréal, Université Laval, Université du Québec à Montréal), two leading technological solutions dedicated to open access and open science. In collaboration with the editorial teams of more than 250 scholarly and cultural journals, Coalition Publica also offers access to the largest corpus of Canadian research results in the humanities and social sciences. More than 220,000 publications are available, and 8,000 new articles are disseminated each year. Rich and diverse, the collections are representative of Canadian and international research and creation: archaeology, economics, history, literary studies, psychology, education... They are consulted each year by nearly 6 million users worldwide.

"Research in the humanities and social sciences is essential to help us better understand the world we live in, and to offer concrete solutions to today's problems, including climate change, economic crises and social inequalities," says Marie-Josée Hébert, Vice-Rector of Research, Discovery, Creation and Innovation at Université de Montréal. "The publications disseminated by Coalition Publica present the results of this research, and thus contribute to the development of an informed citizenry in an era increasingly dominated by the phenomenon of fake news. CFI's investment in our facility will help improve the discoverability of these publications and promote their access around the world," she adds.

Open access and open science are at the heart of Coalition Publica, which is committed to sustaining scholarly journals in a rapidly changing environment. "Coalition Publica's activities have grown significantly in recent years, both in terms of the size of the corpus disseminated and the number of journals supported, as well as in the number of users accessing the collections," says Dugan O’Neil, SFU’s Vice-President, Research and International. "CFI's investment in our facility will support this growth, but more importantly, it will help to raise the profile of Canadian research in the humanities and social sciences, and position Canada as a world leader in digital publishing and open science," he concludes.

Supported by CFI and a network of partners in Canada and abroad, Coalition Publica will continue to strengthen its national production, dissemination, and research infrastructure in English and French, based on the principles of open access and open source development.
