This ongoing investment will build on Coalition Publica's success in advancing the discoverability and impact of social sciences and humanities research in Canada and abroad.

Coalition Publica is pleased to announce the renewal of SSHRC funding to contribute to its ongoing operations for the next six years (2023-2029). With this support, Coalition Publica will continue to develop its services for journals, including interoperability and compliance with international standards, and contribute to research on the scholarly publishing landscape.

Created by the Érudit Consortium and the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), Coalition Publica is a pan-Canadian partnership that brings together key players in scholarly publishing and research in Canada and abroad, in support of an equitable, open and sustainable ecosystem for scholarly communication.

Coalition Publica currently supports 225 Canadian scholarly journals in the humanities and social sciences through services offered in both official languages. These services, sought by a growing number of journals, succeed due to the complementarity between the platform erudit.org, which serves more than 5 million unique users per year, and the PKP community's Open Journal Systems (OJS) software, used by more than 30,000 scholarly journals worldwide.

SSHRC renewed Coalition Publica’s support through the Pan-Canadian Knowledge Access Initiative (PCKAI), following an evaluation conducted by a committee composed of experts in the social sciences and humanities research and library communities. With funding of $1.5M per year for six years, SSHRC's support complements Coalition Publica’s infrastructure funding through the Canada Foundation for Innovation's Major Science Initiatives fund.

Favorisons la communauté avant la commercialisation

Coalition Publica, le partenariat entre Érudit et le Public Knowledge Project (PKP), souligne 25 ans de promotion du libre accès communautaire dans l'édition savante. Ce jalon coïncide avec la Semaine internationale du libre accès 2023, qui a pour thème « La communauté avant la commercialisation ».

Dans l'esprit de ce thème, Coalition Publica reconnaît les contributions inestimables des membres de sa communauté, notamment les revues savantes, les bibliothèques et les organisations associées, qui travaillent ensemble pour développer une infrastructure nationale ouverte pour l'édition savante numérique. Leur engagement à faire progresser les logiciels libres, en particulier Open Journal Systems (OJS), a des retombées significatives. OJS, développé par PKP, est utilisé par plus de 34 000 revues dans le monde, dont près de 100 participent à Coalition Publica et diffusent leur contenu sur la plateforme erudit.org.

Cet effort de collaboration inclut les équipes d’édition des revues, les gestionnaires, les auteur·trices, les évaluateur·trices et les bibliothécaires spécialisées en édition, qui jouent tous et toutes un rôle essentiel dans le domaine de l'édition à but non lucratif au Canada. Ensemble, ils et elles poursuivent la mission de partager ouvertement la connaissance et œuvrent ainsi au bien commun. Fostering Community over Commercialization in Scholarly Publishing

Coalition Publica, a collaborative effort between Érudit and the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), celebrates the 25 anniversary of both organizations, that have fostered community-driven open access in scholarly publishing. This milestone coincides with the 2023 International Open Access Week, which revolves around "Community over Commercialization."

In the spirit of this theme, Coalition Publica recognizes the invaluable contributions of its community members, including scholarly journals, librarians, and aligned organizations, who work together to build a national open infrastructure for digital scholarly publishing. Their dedication to advancing open source software, particularly Open Journal Systems (OJS), has made a significant impact. OJS, developed by PKP, is used by over 34,000 journals worldwide, with nearly 100 participating in Coalition Publica and many more disseminating content on erudit.org.

This collaborative effort extends to journal editors, managers, authors, reviewers, libraries, and library publishers, all of whom play essential roles in the Canadian non-profit publishing landscape. Together, they drive the mission to ensure that knowledge is openly shared for the public good, resulting in a rich, multilingual corpus at the core of Coalition Publica's vision.

The open access infrastructure that Coalition Publica is building is not limited to Canada; it is part of a broader global community that aims to enhance the quality and interoperability of open access content. The success of this endeavor is attributed to the specialized knowledge, guidance, and relationship-building capacity of its community members.

International Open Access Week 2023 focuses on the importance of prioritizing community over commercialization in knowledge dissemination. This theme resonates deeply with Coalition Publica's commitment to sustainable open access and its mission to improve the visibility and reach of scholarly publishing in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

The collaboration between Érudit and PKP is central to this mission. Érudit's platform, serving 5 million users annually, connects seamlessly with the Open Journal Systems, creating a robust ecosystem of accessible scientific and cultural journals.

Community-driven models are chosen over profit-driven models because they ultimately benefit humanity and the world at large. This approach aligns with Coalition Publica's philosophy of prioritizing community over commercialization.

In support of International Open Access Week, Coalition Publica, Érudit, and PKP are actively participating in various events, such as webinars, conferences, and discussions, all aimed at advancing research visibility and promoting open access.

Semaine du libre accès : webinaire Coalition Publica sur les portails nationaux

La table ronde aura lieu en anglais, et un résumé des discussions sera publié en français et en anglais après l’événement.

Améliorer la visibilité de la recherche grâce aux portails nationaux : Perspectives d’institutions pionnières

Joignez-vous aux célébrations des 25 ans du Public Knowledge Project et d’Érudit en participant à leur programmation spéciale au sujet de la communication et de l’édition savantes.

Le 26 octobre, pendant la Semaine du libre accès, des panélistes du Canada, du Danemark, de la Finlande, de l’Irlande, des Pays-Bas et de la Suède discuteront des portails nationaux, c’est-à-dire des collections de revues savantes provenant d’une région donnée et qui réunissent leurs métadonnées, voire leur contenu, dans une interface unique. Cette table ronde réunit des responsables de portails nationaux émergents ou établis en vue de discuter de leurs avantages, des défis qu’ils posent et des stratégies permettant de les mettre en place et de soutenir efficacement leur développement.

Participez à cette discussion afin de rencontrer des pionniers et des pionnières du milieu des portails nationaux et de découvrir leurs meilleures pratiques pour la promotion des recherches locales, leurs réussites et les leçons qu’ils et elles ont tirées de leur expérience.

Antti-Jussi Nygård, Fédération des sociétés savantes finlandaises

Ramana Fragola, Publicera (Bibliothèque nationale de Suède)

Publicera est la plateforme nationale de diffusion en libre accès des revues savantes suédoises. Lancée à l’été 2021, elle hébergera environ 30 revues à la fin de l’année 2023 (19 sont en ligne en date du mois d’août). Ramana Fragola gère la plateforme, travaille avec les équipes des revues tout au long du processus d’intégration et répond à leurs questions relatives au logiciel OJS et aux pratiques d’édition.

Advancing Research Visibility through National Portals: Insights from Spearheading Institutions

Join the Public Knowledge Project and Érudit as they celebrate 25 years by bringing you timely programming on pivotal topics in scholarly communications and publishing.

On October 26, during Open Access Week, join panelists from Canada, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Sweden to discuss national portals – collections of journals that are published within a geographic location that combine their metadata, and sometimes content, in a single interface.

This panel discussion brings together representatives from nascent and mature national portal projects to shed light on the benefits, challenges, and strategies for effectively establishing and maintaining these critical platforms.

Mark Huskisson is the Publishing Specialist at PKP and the co-chair of the Assembly of the Commons at OPERAS. Beginning his career at Cambridge University Press and working at the turbulent confluence of emerging publishing technologies and evolving business models for over thirty years.

Jeanette Hatherill is a Community Development Consultant with Coalition Publica, a partnership between Érudit and PKP to develop a non-commercial, open source national infrastructure for digital scholarly publishing, dissemination, and research to support sustainable open access in Canada.

Jesper Boserup Thestrup, Royal Danish Library

Jesper Boserup Thestrup is a member of the team, which manages tidsskrift.dk and ebooks.au.dk. Tidsskrift.dk is the Danish National OA platform. Ebooks.au.dk is used to publish material written by researchers from Aarhus University. The team supports editors, authors, reviewers and readers so that they can use the platform and maintain both the OJS-server and the OMP-server.

Antti-Jussi Nygård, Federation of Finnish Learned Societies

Antti-Jussi Nygård works as a coordinator at the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies where he is responsible for managing the Journal.fi and Edition.fi platforms and helping the editors with their daily work with OJS and OMP. He also participates in the development work of the applications.

Ruth Hegarty, Publish OA, Ireland

Ruth Hegarty is Managing Editor of the Royal Irish Academy’s publishing house. She is the project lead of PublishOA.ie. The project’s aim is to conduct a feasibility study into creating an all-island Diamond Open Access publishing platform for Ireland. 

Jan Willem Wijnen, Open Journals Netherlands

Jan Willem Wijnen manages Openjournals.nl, the Netherlands national diamond open access platform for journals. It provides services to university presses and independent editorial boards, now hosting 30 journals. Besides providing the technical infrastructure, Openjournals.nl also develops a sustainable organization and financial model for publication of community-owned journals.  

Ramana Fragola, Publicera (National Library of Sweden)

Publicera is the national platform for open access Swedish scholarly journals. It was launched in summer 2021, and by the end of 2023, it will host approximately 30 journals (19 are live as of August 2023). Ramana Fragola manages the platform, working with journal editors through the onboarding process and providing support on questions about OJS and publishing practices.

Join us in this panel discussion to learn from the forerunners of national portal projects as they outline best practices, success stories, and lessons learned in their journey to elevate local research interests.
