How can Canada build a stronger and more sustainable diamond open access ecosystem? Drawing on expertise from across Canada’s scholarly publishing landscape, this report explores key challenges and identifies concrete opportunities for collaboration and collective action.
A Collaborative Report for Collective Action
This report brings together the diverse perspectives shared at the event Advancing Diamond / Vers le libre accès diamant and provides a framework for future collaboration. Developed through a collaborative editorial process, it reflects both the shared ambitions and the diversity of experiences that characterize scholarly publishing across Canada. It aims to inform strategies, support decision-making, and identify practical steps for advancing diamond open access.
A Look Back at the Event
On April 15 and 16, 2026, Advancing Diamond / Vers l’horizon diamant brought together more than 80 participants from 42 organizations across 8 Canadian provinces in Montréal (Tiohtià:ke). Through presentations, panel discussions, and collaborative workshops, participants explored the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of diamond open access in Canada.
Building from a Position of Strength
Canada has a strong foundation for diamond open access, with more than 600 journals, established publishing infrastructures, dedicated expertise, and public funding mechanisms. Yet this landscape faces significant challenges, including uneven access to resources, fragmented efforts, and growing financial pressures on the academic system.
The report identifies eight avenues for collaboration to address these challenges and build a more coordinated and sustainable approach to diamond open access in Canada.
